Being There From The Start
A lot of fathers are at the birth of their child and the most say that it was the biggest event of their lives. But for others, the anxiety of seeing their partner in pain is too much.
Some fathers are worried about passing out at the sight of anything gruesome – others worry that they won’t know how to help their partner. It is worth discussing together what you both want and expect.
Having a role helps some men focus. Some expectant mothers want their partners there for company, reassurance, support, help with breathing (during contractions), back massage and someone to talk to (especially if it is a long< labour). Others don’t want any of this, and don’t even want to be touched, but this is more unusual. Again this needs to be talked about beforehand!
